LearningModule: Open Source Information Technology (upgrade)
Description: Ubuntu Linux is an Open Source software distribution that consists of the Linux operating system and several thousand software packages from all areas of computing. This learning module shows how to obtain and install Ubuntu Linux and introduces important application packages for multimedia applications, web serving, groupware and network printing. Other Open Source software systems are discussed in the learning modules "IT Security", "Zope" and "CLE2".
Objectives: You will be able to install Ubuntu Linux and have basic knowledge with the Linux command line. You will also learn how to install and configure additional software packages with Ubuntu Linux in general, and get to know Linux software for multimedia, web serving, groupware and network printing in particular.
Prerequisites: For the introductory lesson, you need basic knowledge of using a WWW browser. Knowledge of creating a CD-ROM from an ISO image would be helpful. Some of the other lessons require some basic Linux knowledge, in particular use of the command line and use of an editor.
